makes you experience the sweet fragrance of these small green leaves and
the fall makes you enjoy the beautiful sight of the leaves changing to bronze or golden yellow color. You are also sure to enjoy the color of Zelkova bonsai change from green to gray as they mature. It is true that the art of good bonsai cultivation requires great attention to be paid to various details and Japanese Zelkova bonsai is not an exception.

Zelkova bonsai originating from cooler areas require watering only once a
day in winter, however in summer they need to be watered twice a day due
to shallow tree pans that dry up very easily. With the fall of leaves in winter, please do ensure that you water the bonsai only once in 2 days. In addition this bonsai can tolerate only moderate sunlight and should be kept in the shade in the afternoons. A Zelkova bonsai love deep, fertile and well-drained soil. A young Zelkova bonsai needs to be repotted every year, while older bonsai can be repotted every 2 to 3 years when the root get matted and it becomes too big for the container it is placed in. Early spring is the best time to repot the bonsai.

A 10-inch Zelkova bonsai should be trained first by placing a bamboo cane
against the trunk of the tree and tying it in several places, this support should be maintained for the next 3 to 4 years. The tree should be removed annually from the pot and the roots should be trimmed before being repotted to a bigger pot. Cutting a narrow ring on the bark at the bottom in sides of diffident root growth ensures proportionate and balanced growth of roots. Trimming leaves the first time involves leaving only 1/3rd or 1/4th of the leaves and leaving the stalk clean for sprouting branches. In addition you should cut each shoot back leaving only 1 or 2 buds besides cutting and rubbing off sprouts as they appear in the spring season. Training of branches requires tying them with string, sticks and copper wire to encourage growth in a parallel direction that diverge in opposite directions. Building of small bamboo terraces to attach the branches helps create curves. The shoots should be cut back leaving just 1 or 2 leaves. The beautiful broom type of pruning works well with thick branches, however this bonsai lends itself to many other form of styling too.

Last but most important do ensure that an overall hardy Japanese Zelkova
bonsai tree, a miniature gray-bark elm tree is protected from the frost
outdoors and looked after by moderate watering throughout the year to
ensure a healthy and beautiful bonsai cultivation.
