Some bonsai artists prefer miniature indoor bonsai plants adding a
new dimension to interior décor, while others may like and prefer
outdoor bonsai that has the distinction of being grown in the ground or
in containers. In addition, outdoor bonsai is best enjoyed in evergreen
trees like pine and juniper, and deciduous plants like elm that lose their
leaves during the dormant fall season with colorful buds in spring season.

It is very interesting that pine, juniper and elm bonsai do more better outdoor
except during the freezing winter months when they are to be placed indoors
for plant protection. In addition, outdoor bonsai go through various stages
after they are planted, their leaves may turn yellow and drop too. It is
good to be patient and accept these changes as part of getting used to the
surrounding environment. Proper watering plays a very vital role for healthy
outdoor bonsai, sometimes the topsoil may be dry but the inner soil may
be moist. Poking your finger 1-inch into the soil helps check water level, if
dry ensure to water your outdoor bonsai thoroughly until the water flows
from the bottom of the bonsai pot. As a general rule the water level should
be checked every 2 weeks. As a general practice water your outdoor bonsai
more frequently in warmer summer months and less frequency in the winter
months when the temperature is below 45 degrees F. Optimum and careful
watering goes to building healthy outdoor bonsai.

Cater to the nutrients needs of your outdoor bonsai tree does need nutrients
with fertilizers, the frequency, type and strength being highly subjective. It
is best to ascertain it from your specialized neighborhood bonsai nursery
or gardening supplies outlets. The growing period or spring requires you to
apply fertilizers once in 2 weeks, but never apply fertilizers in the dormant
winter months. Ensure that you apply fertilizers to the foliage and allow the
liquid fertilizer to run down to the soil and roots. A proportionate dosage of
vitamins and hormone help to promote health bonsai cultivation. Pruning
and trimming that are pre-requisite of a healthy and artistic bonsai should be
done with special trimmers and sharp shears. Deciduous and tropical trees
are best pruned at an angle just above the leaf, while evergreen trees are
trimmed by pinching back any excess foliage growth. As an initial step to
repotting, the roots of your outdoor bonsai are to be pruned and all the roots
should be inside the pot only, 1/3rd of the root ball is removed and replaced
with fresh bonsai soil. The outdoor bonsai tree generally are repotted every
2 to 3 years, however variations do exist depending on the species and the
growth speed of the bonsai.
