Know All About Ligustrum Bonsai Before Getting One

Ligustrum bonsai originating evergreen shrubs and trees in the woods of
North Africa, Europe, Australia and the Himalayas is most suited for most
amateur bonsai enthusiasts being able to easily tolerate small neglects and
being indestructible. The most popular species of this bonsai are Ligustrum
Ovalifolium, Ligustrum vulgare, and Ligustrum sinense, some of them
producing white flowers that produce small fruits with just one seed.

The Ligustrum bonsai can tolerate both shade and sunlight conditions, but
cannot tolerate temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Hence never
place your bonsai outside in winter. Lack of sunlight and humidity can harm
the bonsai so it is best to water your plant regularly and slowly to ensure
effective absorption in the soil, it would be best to use a moisture meter.
A common trick is to place the bonsai pot in a sink with 1 or 2 inches of
water. Misting the plant when outdoors facilitates the roots and keeps the
leaves green and healthy. Never place the bonsai near a ventilator or a draft
to avoid drying of leaves and foliage. A humidity tray filled with small
stones and water placed below proves to be an effective watering method.

It is extremely important to provide your Ligustrum bonsai with fertilizers,
general and liquid fertilizers being the best, followed by organic liquid
fertilizer or a chemical fertilizer that is to be diluted to half the strength.
Fertilizers need to be applied once a month in winter d once every 15 days in
spring and the growing season. Spraying non toxic insect spray or fungicides
when the soil is moist help to prevent aphids, leaf spot, scale insects, spider
mites, white flies, mites and rotting of roots.

Trimming, pruning and training your Ligustrum bonsai regularly in the
growing season in late winter or early spring helps to maintain the shape
and style. The larger leaves and shoots with very long internodes should
be removed and thin wires should be used to hold the branch in the desired
position. After six weeks, the branch is trained and the wire should be
removed. Ensure that you never wire the bonsai immediately after repotting.
Repotting is best done in spring by using a basic soil mix and thereafter the
Ligustrum bonsai is to be placed in the shade to aid growth of new roots.

Having known all about Ligustrum bonsai, the evergreen shrubs of the
Himalayas it is now most appropriate to get one and enjoy your bonsai for a
long time to come.
