Bonsai Tips

Bonsai, an art of growing miniature trees requires a right combination of
effort and ingeniousness and use of appropriate techniques like potting,
pruning, root reduction, defoliation and grafting to grow into a beautiful
mature bonsai. Here are some bonsai tips that could help you as a bonsai
artist.

The first bonsai tip is to make an appropriate choice of indoor or outdoor
bonsai, because you should be really interested in the first bonsai variety you start growing. You would definitely enjoy and find it rewarding to grow your first bonsai with seeds, but it may take time to really give out its full beauty. However growing bonsai from cuttings would also be rewarding though it could demand more of your time and effort. The more hardy plant materials like pine and spruce and elm, jade tree and juniper are ideal for outdoor bonsai, while the more tropical plants as the ficus, natal plum, schefflera, and weeping fig are best grown indoors. The flowering species or deciduous plants are kept indoors during the frosty winter months and kept outdoors in summer for sunlight and fresh air.

The next of the bonsai tips is optimized watering of your bonsai, too much
causes rotting of roots and too less will cause death to the plant. As a general rule you should water your bonsai more often during the summer season and when the soil turns dry. A spongy soil requires no watering. To save wash out of excess soil it is best to avoid the use of garden hose. Bonsai love humidity, they should be kept in a shallow tray with water, evaporation of water from the tray helps increase environmental humidity level around your bonsai. The most ideal option for feeding and fertilizing to help growth and nourishment is the application of a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 2 weeks.

The bonsai plant should be placed in a container with its roots well covered. Moss can be planted around or grafted to give an aged appearance and provide moisture. There is no need for fertilizers for about 6 months because the packaged soil comes with enough nutrients. After six months the bonsai can be trained by use of bonsai wires that can be wrapped gently around its limbs and/trunk. Pruning or shaping is a continuous process and continues till the bonsai tree matures to its full size. It is vital to keep the leaves, needles, flowers as well as the container in which it grows proportional in size to the tree.

These bonsai tips could help any bonsai artist in keeping a beautiful bonsai.
